About Us

Big Yellow Boots Stockdog Training is a dog training facility located in south central Wisconsin just
east of the Wisconsin Dells and is owned and operated by John Wentz and Donna May. We specialize
in training dogs and their owners for herding and are currently accepting new students and their
dogs.

John has been raising sheep in the Portage, Wisconsin area since 1986 and in addition to training
and using his own Border Collies to help him on the farm, he has been providing sheep herding
training and instruction to outside handlers and their dogs.  His credentials include being a member of
the Wisconsin Working Stockdog Association (WWSDA),member of the United States Border Collie
Handlers Association (USBCHA), and a certified judge through the American Herding Breed
Association (AHBA).

Donna May has been training and competing with her Border Collies since 1999.  She is also a
member of the United States Border Collie Handlers Association (USBCHA) and has trained her own
dog, Gael, to the Open level.  They have competed in such trials as Meeker, Bluegrass, and the
USBCHA National Nursery Finals.

At Big Yellow Boots we welcome all breeds of dogs, but do specialize in training Border Collies for
stockwork.  Our goal is to offer persons of all levels the unique experience of training their own dogs
while they learn about dogs and stockmanship.  There is nothing more satisfying than teaching and
watching your dog work stock as they were bred to do.  We encourage and invite you to come out to
our facility and experience this satisfaction for yourself!

We have several fields that are designed for all levels of dogs and their handlers.  Group lessons are
currently held on Wednesday evenings starting at 5:00 p.m. and also on Saturday and Sunday from
10:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.  Additional days of the week are also available for private lessons.

The cost for stock lessons with your dog is $40.00 per dog/per day on the weekends and $30.00 per
dog on Wednesday evenings.  We are also available during the week for private lessons which are
$30.00 per dog.

We also offer custom stockdog training at Big Yellow Boots Stockdog Training facility with a number of
options designed to suit each   individual’s specific needs.  We can take your dog in for a two week
evaluation period if you simply want to see if your dog has an interest in working stock or we can
create a custom training program for your dog over the course of a few months to prepare you and
your dog for competing at herding competitions.

Please feel free to explore our website and contact us with any questions or information on our
training facility.
